Project Overview

AV Vantage was commissioned to transform a dedicated room in this Oakville residence into a complete private entertainment environment designed for movies, music, karaoke and time with family and friends.

The homeowner wanted more than a traditional home theater.

The vision was to create one sophisticated space capable of delivering an immersive cinematic experience while also becoming a high-performance private karaoke and social entertainment room.

Rather than treating the cinema system, karaoke system and acoustic treatment as separate components, AV Vantage approached the room as one complete environment.

Sound isolation, architectural finishes, acoustics, projection, audio, lighting and system control were considered together so that the finished space would feel intentional, refined and easy to enjoy.

The Vision

The homeowner wanted a room that could change character depending on how the family wanted to use it.

For movie nights, the space needed to feel quiet, immersive and cinematic.

For karaoke and entertaining, it needed to become energetic and engaging, with powerful vocal reproduction, dynamic music performance and an easy transition between different modes.

At the same time, the room needed to maintain a clean residential appearance.

The technology could be powerful, but it could not dominate the space visually.

The objective was therefore not simply to combine two AV systems.

It was to create one private entertainment room with multiple experiences built into it.

The Challenge

Creating a true dual-purpose entertainment environment presented several architectural and acoustic challenges.

Adjacent Mechanical & Utility Space

The room is located directly beside the home's electrical and utility area.

Low-frequency mechanical vibration and background noise had the potential to interfere with quiet movie scenes and reduce the sense of isolation expected from a dedicated private cinema.

Two Very Different Listening Experiences

Cinema and live karaoke place very different demands on a room.

A private cinema requires controlled reflections, accurate imaging, wide dynamic range and immersive surround sound.

Karaoke requires powerful vocal reproduction, high output capability, feedback control and enough acoustic control to remain comfortable during energetic performances.

The room had to perform convincingly in both environments.

Maintaining a Clean Interior

The homeowner did not want the front of the room dominated by large speakers and visible technology.

The screen wall, acoustic treatment and equipment placement therefore needed to be designed as part of the architecture rather than added after the room was completed.

Architectural Acoustic Design

Before the entertainment systems were installed, AV Vantage addressed the room itself.

Sound isolation was incorporated into the wall and ceiling construction to reduce unwanted noise transfer from the neighbouring utility space and help contain sound within the entertainment room.

Custom acoustic treatments were then integrated into the finished interior.

These treatments help control excessive reflections, improve dialogue and vocal clarity, and create a more balanced listening environment across both cinema and karaoke modes.

Just as importantly, the acoustic treatment was designed to complement the room visually.

Rather than appearing as technical acoustic products attached to the walls, the panels became part of the architectural character of the space.

Designed for Entertainment

This room was designed around the experience rather than around individual pieces of equipment.

Cinema

For movie viewing, the system creates an immersive multi-channel sound field with clear dialogue, strong dynamics and substantial low-frequency impact.

A large 135-inch acoustically transparent screen forms the visual centrepiece of the room while allowing the front loudspeakers to operate from behind the screen.

This creates a more natural cinematic presentation while keeping the front wall visually clean.

Karaoke & Music

When the family wants to entertain, the same room transforms into a private karaoke environment.

Professional wireless microphones and dedicated vocal processing provide clarity, dynamics and effects appropriate for live singing.

The loudspeaker system was selected with enough performance capability to serve both cinematic playback and higher-energy music reproduction.

The result is a room that does not force the homeowner to choose between a serious cinema and a serious entertainment system.

Both experiences coexist within the same space.

Technology Without Visual Clutter

A major design priority was preserving the clean architectural appearance of the room.

The main front-stage loudspeakers were positioned behind the acoustically transparent projection screen, allowing the sound to originate naturally from the image while keeping the speakers completely out of sight.

Cabling and equipment were also organized to minimize their visual presence.

The result is a front wall defined by the screen and interior design rather than by electronics.

This principle carried throughout the project:

the technology supports the experience without becoming the visual focus of the room.

One Room, Multiple Experiences

One of the most important aspects of the completed design is how easily the room transitions between uses.

The homeowner does not need to operate two complicated independent systems.

Cinema playback, music and karaoke were integrated so the family can move between different entertainment experiences without turning the room into a technical exercise.

Movie night can feel like a dedicated private cinema.

Karaoke night can feel energetic and social.

Music can fill the space for casual entertaining.

Yet visually, it remains one cohesive room.

Installation & Integration

AV Vantage coordinated the acoustic treatment, sound isolation and AV installation as part of a single room design.

Speaker locations, projection geometry, screen placement, subwoofer performance, microphone processing and acoustic treatment were considered together rather than independently.

The system was then installed, configured and calibrated for the characteristics of the finished room.

Particular attention was given to maintaining clarity and dynamics across both cinema and live vocal performance.

The Result

The completed Oakville entertainment room is more than a home theater and more than a karaoke room.

It is a purpose-built private entertainment space designed around the way the family actually lives.

Sound-isolation construction significantly reduces interference from the adjacent utility area while also helping contain entertainment sound within the room.

The acoustically transparent screen conceals the front loudspeaker system, while custom acoustic treatments become part of the room's finished design.
